Donkey Trade, Climate Change and Rural Poor.

Image
The diminishing population of Donkeys coupled with climate change in Northern Nigeria presents a potent danger to Northern rural life where almost half the population is rural and thus agrarian based. The donkey is central as a source of virtually free labor in transportation, tilling of the land, power for borehole and irrigation. The donkey is soo central to rural life. The added dimension of sale of donkeys to merchants served to decimate the population. The Chinese have been fingered in the poaching industry which led a catastrophic decline of many Africa's wildlife with consequences to the ecosystem.  Government has banned the trade, it can also, alternatively, regulate.  Research should be undertaken to produce bigger, faster, stronger and tamer breed which can greatly aid the rural poor.  The threat of Climate change, manifest in desert encroachment, reduction in watering and grazing grounds coupled with a 'belt of instability' across the Sahel Savanah belt ...

Bidi'a (Innovation in Islam)

BID'A  (INNOVATION IN ISLAM)  BY MUKHTAR HABIB (Ph.D) My talk will aim to clarify some possible misunderstandings of the concept of innovation (bida) in Islam, in light of the prophetic hadith state,  "Beware of matters newly begun, for every matter newly begun is innovation, every innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in hell."    The sources I use are traditional Islamic sources, and my discussion will centre on three points:  1.       The first point is that scholars say that the above hadith does not refer to all new things without restriction, but only to those which nothing in Sacred Law attests to the validity of. The use of the word "every" in the hadith does not indicate an absolute generalization, for there are many examples of similar generalizations in the Qur'an and sunna that are not applicable without restriction, but rather are qualified by restrictions found in other primary textual evidence.  2....

THE #ENDSARS PROTEST AND MY CONCERNS

Image
#ENDSARS PROMOTERS ARE INVITED TO NOTE:   1. That they should advocate  for negotiations with government rather than this approach of protest that have potential to resulting into violence.     2. That it is in the books of history that in all dealings with governments and sovereignties worldwide and throughout all history, including wars, everything ends on the negotiating table.    3. That this protest will no doubt begin to lose citizens support due to continued inconvenience and collosal lose to the economy.   4. That the entire #ENDSARS promoters should further  note that the government has demonstrated readiness to address virtually all your demands and it is evident they have also adopted a policy of non interference with the protests across all boards.    5. That what is happening in the country now is not sufficient enough to force givernment but it is enough to make it consider and oblige. We should not for once ...

WASTEFULNESS IN ISLAM (ISRĀF).

Image
Isrāf is any useless action or any action which exceeds the natural limits, both in quantity & quality. It also applies to emotions, ethics, culture, or social characteristics. Eg. Isrāf in emotions is hitting one's self while mourning, and so on.Isrāf with regards to finance is known as 'Tadhbīr' and Allah SWT refers to it as a behavior of the brothers of the Shaytān (Q17:27) Isrāf with regards to eating is known as 'Ifrāt' and is described as 'evil and terrible' in Al Mu'jam. In any case, isrāf breeds much evil.Stinginess is likewise discouraged in Islam (Q57:24). Islam is a religion of moderation. 'Moderation' is arguably conceptual, but it is dependent upon individual standards & societal norms. In sincerity, this is a quite easy scale to measure what counts as Isrāf and what does not. Allah SWT, while lauding His true servants ('Ibādur-Rahmān) says: “And (they are) those, who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggard...

Climate change and security implications for Northern Nigeria.

Image
Loss of farmlands, grazing lands, fishing grounds and fertile soil are the biggest drivers of the persistent crisis bedeviling the Northern region of Nigeria. Desertification and draught costs about 350000 hectares, states such as Borno, Jigawa, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara are extremely vulnerable, and not surprisingly, these states have seen a sharp rise in kidnapping, banditry and the activities of transnational terrorist groups (ISWAP, Ansaru) etc. From 1960 to date, Lake Chad has receded by over 90% of its original size, this has cost lost of farmlands, hunting and fishing grounds for millions of people in the North Eastern region, this region for over a decade has been plagued by the scourge of terrorism, exacerbated by the receding of the lake chad and desertification thus contributing immensely to the provision of enabling and fertile ground for recruitment for ISWAP and a host of terrorist franchises. Climate change coupled with a rapid rise in population increa...

Is there any reward for good other than Good. (55:60)

Is there any reward for good other than Good. (55:60) In December 2016, a group of passionate Youth comprising both genders bothered about the decaying state of education in their locality decided to come together and contribute their quota regardless of how miniscule the impact will be. Or so they taught. Ably marshaled by the seasoned educationist in Mrs Sa'adah Aboubakar, they decided to use an Islamiyyah in Badarawa Kaduna as venue which they had to renovate. The decision to choose Badarawa was to make logistics easier for most of the enrolled students whom were from not so privileged backgrounds. The volunteers were of varying backgrounds, from Engineers to Architect to Chemist to Accountants, Computer scientist, Anatomist to Geographer, undergraduates and so on. It was decided to concentrate on basic reading and writing, phonetics and basic science as these are fundamentally the bedrock of basic education. The volunteers had differing reasons for volunteering, ...

Imagination and the Soul of the Individual and Society.

Image
"Just as a mental form, such as a dogma or a doctrine, can be an adequate, albeit limited, reflection of a Divine Truth, so a sensible form can retrace a truth or a reality which transcends both the plane of sensible forms and the plane of thought." –Titus Burckhardt "Imagination is more important than knowledge, for knowledge is limited whereas imagination embraces the entire world, simulating progress' -Albert Einstein. - It is in the very nature of Man to replicate and mirror his/her external world. As the cosmos is so finely tunes, man aims to achieve point of resonance between his internal and the exterior world, and thus, a Man, society or civilization at peace with itself, resonate and manifest that which is divinely turned. This is a phenomenon found across civilizations and religion. The rituals of Islamic practices are all connected to a divine presence either by the positions of the stars, circumambulation during pilgrimage like the movement of cele...
